Choosing a Handmade Rug to Decorate Your Interior

The age of the carpet has been over for many years now, and we prefer tiling or parquet, easier to clean, and less allergenic. However, the carpet had the advantage of decorating, and above all of preventing cold feet, when you get out of bed for example.

To remedy this, however, it is still possible to put rugs in its interior, which have become real decorative elements. While looking for a suitable model with my wife to “furnish” our stay, we made some discoveries, both in the rules to be respected, as in the choice of materials and possibilities.

I.      The Shape And Size Of The Rug

First of all, you have to determine the appropriate size for the rug: if it is too large or too small, the decorative effect may indeed fall apart. This is all the more important for a handmade Area rug used in a dining room:

always plan an additional 55 to 60 cm on each side of the table, to leave room for the chairs and their movements. When you choose a rug that is too short, the chairs end up next to the rug when you want to sit on it, and there is therefore a rather unpleasant imbalance.

It is also necessary to think if possible to keep an empty corridor to “travel” beside the table, in order not to walk half on the floor and a half on the carpet

It is therefore better to plan a fairly large model. This also applies to the living room, to avoid leaving a space between the carpet and the sofa, for example.

II.       Rug Material

The choice of material is the second important element. We have the choice between natural materials such as wool, linen, or bamboo, and synthetic materials such as polypropylene or polyester for example. Each material will respond to different constraints.

First of all a budget constraint, since natural materials are more expensive.

Then there is a constraint linked to wearing: in a place with a lot of traffic, it will be necessary to favor resistant and easily washable materials.

Once these two criteria have been defined, all that remains is to find THE carpet that will enhance our room. The choice is more or less wide depending on the store. The carpets are sorted by room (entrance, living room, dining room, bedroom, hallway, bathroom, etc. There are even models suitable for the terrace and the outside!)

But we can also sort the rugs by shape and size (custom rugs are even possible), by material, by color, by thickness, and of course by style, from shaggy rugs to contemporary rugs, including patchwork rugs, etc. Of course, nothing will replace the real appreciation of a rug by seeing it with our own eyes and touching it, something impossible on the internet.
